There are many types of spiritualism. Some spiritualists believe in reincarnation as the way the soul of the person who died returns to their own body. This is probably the most common form of reincarnation and is usually viewed as the main philosophy behind spiritism.
The main belief of spiritualism is that spirits communicate through the invisible forces that work with them on a daily basis. Many mediums that work in the spiritualist community are focused on communication between the spirit realm and those on the earthly plane. Communication between the spirit world and those on earth is common among spiritualists. This is because many mediums receive messages from loved ones who have passed on. These messages can be very poignant and some can bring great comfort. Spiritualists believe that all spirits are powerful and can come into physical form. They communicate using special tools called "mediums". The word "medium" can mean a number of things. For example, in an assisted-living facility, the mediums commonly perform seances or communicate through telepathy. Some spiritualists even say that a medium has the ability to see and communicate with dead people. Many spiritualists hold to the concept of universal salvation, or in other words they believe in the survival of every life. This is contrary to materialism, which views the world as having a goal of creating a better world for the future. Spiritualists believe in the universal significance of life and believe in individual salvation at the personal level. The most famous spiritualist churches are those of Jerry and Esther and their book "King in Yellow." King in Yellow argues for universal salvation, separation from the world and a life after death. Many spiritualists believe that King in Yellow is one of the most influential books concerning spiritualism. Spiritualists believe in working with spirits or angelic guides who can help lead a person to enlightenment. In many spiritualist churches you will find trained spiritualists who will help walk you through your spiritual experiences. Some spiritualists believe that mediums are able to communicate messages from God directly to people who are on the verge of conversion to spiritualism. Some spiritualists work only with people who want to learn about the Christian faith. Others work with people who already have a spiritualist perspective but are not ready to become totally immersed in spiritualism. Spiritualism has its roots in many ancient philosophies including Hinduism, Zen Buddhism and Islam. Spiritualism is also a branch of organized religion founded by Robert Ingersoll more than a hundred years ago. It differs from other forms of organized religion in that its beliefs do not have an afterlife. It also emphasizes the fact that all things in this world are interconnected and that spirit is the source of life. Spiritualists differ on how they define spirit.
